3rd Aley International Sculpture Symposium, Lebanon

*Duration:* 3 weeks of on-site work in the city of Aley *Material:* Lebanese stone *Dimensions:* Large-scale sculpture on a stone base; total height (including base): 170 cm *Category:* Abstract sculpture – National symbolism

*Artistic Description:* The sculpture is an abstraction of two birds united within an oval form, symbolizing the unity of North and South Sudan prior to their separation. It is executed with smooth, fluid lines that possess a dynamic quality. The internal void grants the sculpture its own “sky,” while the oval shape enhances its beauty and vitality, creating the impression that the mass itself is breathing. The work commemorates the dream of unity between the South and the North—a dream that deeply resonated with an entire generation.

The Language Of Colors (Sprache der Farben)

Language of colors is an art workshop that took place in November 2002 at the Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences (Alanus Hochschule) near Bonn, Germany. It brought together international artists and participants_including notable academic and cross-cultural exchange linked to University of Bonn programs_to explore the emotional, psychological, and structural properties of color in fine art.

Here as the Centre of the World

Here as the Centre of the World is a transnational artistic research project for young artists from Taipei (Taiwan), Damascus (Syria), Beirut (Lebanon), Khartoum (Sudan), Diyarbakir (Turkey) and Enschede (The Netherlands). It was launched in the spring of 2006 and consists of 6 workshops, a conference and the publication of a book. Finally around 70 artists will have been involved in the collaboration. Rather than inviting artists to carry on their usual practices in a ‘novel’ environment, the project taps into the creative potential of intercultural exchange by creating workshops where artists carry out artistic research together. The workshops aim to empower upcoming generations of artists by opening up new spaces for critical thought, fresh and unexpected ways of seeing and interacting with and between cultures. As a focal point for the workshops, one street has been chosen in each city as a locus for artistic research. Participants are encouraged to work together direct

I participated in the workshop with a conceptual work titled: “They Are There… Behind the Smoke” This work explores the human presence amidst the transformations of daily life. Characters move within the vortex of existence until their features dissolve behind the smoke, leaving behind only shadows and a certain transparency—a transparency that reflects the purity of their souls and their innate human kindness. My aim was to portray the human being as a trace rather than a physical body, highlighting the fragility of existence in the face of life’s rapid pace. I employed photography, video, and X-ray film—media rich in connotations regarding absence and presence, visibility and the unseen—to craft a visual experience that invites the viewer to contemplate the human being as memory and trace. Diyarbakır Workshop – Turkey For the Diyarbakır workshop, I created a conceptual piece in an abandoned building—formerly a prison—that people tended to avoid due to the heavy memories and sense of gloom it evoked. The workshop took place in winter; the trees were bare, prompting me to ask: How can art breathe life back into a place that has lost its meaning? I selected a tree and hung colorful balloons from its branches, transforming them into a visual metaphor for fruit that had not yet ripened but held the promise of the future. I then invited local children to play and “harvest” this fruit. The balloons were not merely festive elements; they symbolized hope and the possibility of reimagining the space. Children represent the future; they are the ones capable of sowing the seeds of life and reaping the fruits of the place’s renewal. Through the act of play, the memory of the prison was—if only briefly—transformed into a space of joy, underscoring art’s capacity to turn places burdened by the past into open spaces for life and possibility.
